Hypnotherapy: clinical hypnosis, as a method in psychotherapy

Hypnotherapist. Clinical hypnosis has nothing to do with stage shows. It is a state of focused attention in which the mind becomes far more receptive to suggestion and the body changes its automatic responses. It is used in hospitals, in dentistry and in pain management, with scientific literature behind it.

In a session you do not lose control and you do nothing you do not want to do. What changes is the mind's level of criticism: there, an instruction reaches the place where, wide awake, you would have rejected it with "I know, but I cannot".

That is why hypnosis is useful for automatic things: a phobia, smoking, emotional eating, sleep-onset insomnia, chronic pain. Automatisms are easier to rewrite in the right state.

Medical hypnotherapy as a service in its own right, in Brașov, is done at the practice of my colleague Dr. Alina Diana Nemes - a physician, with training in medical hypnosis. I use it as a method inside psychotherapy, when it is the right tool for what we are working on. When you need medical hypnotherapy sessions as such, that is where I send you.

Who answers you

Signed: Alina Robu

I am Alina Robu — specialist integrative psychotherapist, specialist clinical psychologist and specialist sexologist, with over 20 years of clinical practice. I use clinical hypnosis as a method inside psychotherapy, not as a separate service. I am a doctoral candidate in psychology and neuroscience and co-founder of the BrainMap Institute, where, when useful, what changes in a session can also be followed on the qEEG brain map.

I am a psychologist, not a doctor, and hypnosis does not take the place of any treatment: no medication is stopped or changed because we work in hypnosis, and pain, insomnia or a sudden change go to a doctor first. For medical hypnotherapy as such, in a medical setting, I refer you to my colleague Dr. Alina Diana Nemes, with whom I have worked for over ten years. I work with adolescents and adults, at the practice in Brașov and online.

In short

What actually happens in a hypnosis session

Idea 1

You stay in control

You are conscious, you hear everything, you remember everything and you can stop at any moment. The fear of hypnosis usually disappears in the first few minutes, while I explain the mechanism.

Idea 2

In your own language

The suggestions are built on the goal we agreed together and on the way you yourself speak about the problem, not on formulas taken from a book.

Idea 3

An instrument, not a miracle

It is used when it is the most suitable instrument in the plan, and never in place of necessary medical treatment.

How I work

Four steps, in this order

01

Preparation

I explain exactly what follows, what you will feel and what cannot happen. The fear of hypnosis disappears once you know the mechanism.

02

Induction and deepening

Moving into a state of focused relaxation, at your own pace. Nothing forced.

03

The work itself

Therapeutic suggestions built on the agreed goal, in your own language, not in generic formulas.

04

Anchoring

You learn to reactivate the state on your own, so the work continues between sessions.

Table

Myths about hypnosis, set against reality

The beliefWhat actually happens
"You lose control."You stay conscious, you can speak, and you can come out of the state whenever you want.
"You fall asleep."You are more attentive than usual, just less critical towards suggestion.
"You remember nothing."You do remember, much as you would a relaxed conversation.
"It only works on some people."Depth varies from person to person, but the work can be done at any depth.
"It solves anything, in one session."It is one instrument in a staged plan. A single session can change a great deal, but rarely everything.

Clinical hypnosis is used in hospitals, in dentistry and in pain management, with scientific literature behind it.

Natural questions

What people ask me before the first consultation

Can I come only for hypnosis, without psychotherapy?
With me, hypnosis is a method inside psychotherapy, not a separate service. The first session is an assessment: what you want to change, since when, what you have tried and whether hypnosis is the right tool for it; sometimes it is not, and I tell you so. If the goal is specific — a phobia, smoking, a medical procedure you are afraid of — the course can be short, but it remains a plan with stages, not an isolated session. When you need medical hypnotherapy as such, in a medical setting, I refer you to the practice of my colleague Dr. Alina Diana Nemes.
Do I lose control? Can I be made to say or do something I do not want?
No. Clinical hypnosis is a state of focused attention, not of sleep and not of submission: you hear everything, you can speak, you can refuse a suggestion and you can leave the state whenever you want. What changes is how critical the mind is towards an instruction you have already accepted, out loud, as a goal. Nothing is worked on without your knowing. The fear of “losing control” usually disappears in the first minutes, while I explain the mechanism.
Can anyone be hypnotised? What if I do not “go under”?
Almost anyone enters a state of focused relaxation; what differs is the depth, from person to person and from one day to the next. A deep trance is not needed for the work: suggestions also work at a light level, where you feel simply relaxed and attentive. And if one day it does not come together, it is not a failure: we work with another tool from the plan and come back to it.
Does it work for quitting smoking?
For many people, yes — but it is not a magic session. Smoking is an automatic habit, tied to moments and emotions, exactly the ground on which hypnosis works well. What we do: we identify the triggers, we build the suggestions on your reason, not on general formulas, and you learn to reactivate the state yourself when the craving comes. It is usually 6 to 12 sessions, not one; after the first I tell you how many I estimate. And once you have stopped we stay in touch — we meet again after one month, after three and after six — because the risk of relapse is real, above all in the first two weeks, and continued support lowers it. If you also have a treatment from your doctor for this, it continues.
How many sessions are needed?
It depends on the goal. Specific things — a particular phobia, preparing for a procedure, sleep-onset insomnia — are usually worked through in a few sessions. Quitting smoking usually takes 6 to 12 sessions, followed by a return after one month, after three and after six. Chronic pain, anxiety or trauma call for a longer course, in which hypnosis is one of the methods. After the first session I tell you honestly how many I estimate, and by what sign we will know the goal has been reached.
Can it be done online?
Yes, for most goals. The video session follows the same steps: the conversation and the goal, the induction, the work itself, the return. You need a place where you are alone for an hour and no one interrupts you, headphones and a stable connection; you sit in a chair or an armchair, not in bed. It works the same way with adolescents and with adults, at the practice or on video.
Does it replace medical or psychiatric treatment?
No, never. No medication is stopped or changed because we work in hypnosis. For chronic pain, insomnia or a medical procedure, hypnosis comes alongside the doctor's treatment, not in its place, and, when useful, I talk to your doctor. I am a psychologist, not a doctor: if what you bring belongs to a doctor, I say so at the first session and refer you there.
Will I remember the session? Is it confidential?
You remember it, much like a relaxed conversation: nothing is “erased” and there are no secret sessions. What we discuss stays between us: it is not written in a file accessible to anyone else and it is not discussed with your family or your partner without your consent. The only exceptions are those set by law, when there is an immediate danger to you or to someone else, and I tell you about them at the first session.
How much does it cost, and is it covered by health insurance?
It is not covered: sessions are private and are paid in full in advance, online, by card, when you book. The fee is RON 500 for a 60-minute session, the same at the practice and online. After the first session I tell you how many I estimate, so you know the cost before we go further.

Not sure this is the right field for you?

A first conversation clears up exactly that. You tell me what is happening, I tell you honestly which field the work belongs to and whether someone else is needed.
